An awe-inspiring home built 'half-buried' in the side of a hill featuring a stunning pool, rooftop gardens and sweeping coastal views has taken out one of Australia's most sought-after awards.
The 'Bunkeren' home nestled in the hills of Whitebridge near Newcastle, NSW, was designed by architect James Stockwell who was inspired by the surrounding landscape and his and the client's shared love of hidden wartime bunkers.
Earlier this year the incredible building was named among the winners at the Australian Institute of Architects' national awards for its sleek, modern design.

'Bunkeren' was built with stark but sleek natural concrete platforms. The home is integrated into the natural stone it sits on, which was carved and shaped to make part of the underground living and dining area.
'When you meld with the land there is a wonderful sense of being part of the natural world rather than just sitting on it,' Mr Stockwell told FEMAIL.
'The trees and plants can grow over this house - as it is concrete, it can handle it. In 10 years, 20 years, it will be a great balance of natural and built worlds.'
