The Hype

Coined the “best mattress you can buy in the UK” right now, the Brook + Wilde Ultima mattress is the most expensive – and technologically advanced – of the sleep brand's three exceptional mattress offerings. With ten layers engineered for ultimate comfort (more on that later), it's “one up” from the Elite mattress (which has eight layers) and two up from the Lux mattress (which has five). It launched back in December 2020, but (unsurprisingly) gained popularity during the pandemic – when every woman and her dog were taking a long hard look at their sleep routine and making some welcome changes.

Brook + Wilde's USP is that you can choose your firmness preference – soft, medium or firm – when placing your order. You can also choose between Double, King and Super King when it comes to sizing. This customisation ability is, of course, present in the Ultima offering – alongside the promise of an “ultimate sleeping surface” (there are 6,000 nano and pocket springs cushioned with luxurious layers of memory foam), temperature cooling abilities (to reduce your body temperature by two degrees through continuous passive and dynamic airflow) and pressure relief.

Wave Technology is expertly engineered to provide the best possible comfort and specialised, zonal support, easing your joints and alleviating pressure in all the right places. Girls with a bad back, you know what to do.

Sleep Bio

I've never really had any trouble sleeping (luckily), but over the past couple of months, I really started to notice some problems with my existing mattress. It dipped in the middle, I could feel literally every one of the slats of my bed frame through it (not ideal), and I was waking up with back pain. It comes as no surprise: it was the mattress that came with my flat when I first moved in – and that I hadn't bothered to replace.

It was time to switch things up, and there was only one mattress on my radar. Brook + Wilde's Ultima mattress had been coined the “best mattress you can buy in the UK right now,” and with a 100 night comfort trial and 10-year guarantee, I was keen to give it a go. Hotel-standard bed, incoming.

The Verdict

I reviewed the Ultima mattress over four months. Yep: this thing got delivered back in early June 2021, so I've been sleeping on it through multiple heatwaves, during the recent colder weather, on my own and with a partner. I went for the medium firmness option in a double size – and to be honest? I couldn't fault it. It has elevated my bedding game endlessly, injecting much-needed luxury into my bedroom and delivering on all fronts. It is supremely comfortable, soft to the touch and cooling even when the temperatures soar. As for my bad back? Well, those aches and pains are a thing of the past.

Who is the Ultima mattress for?

The Brook + Wilde Ultima mattress is fitting for people with all kinds of sleeping styles. Whether you sleep on your side, back or front, it'll cradle your body and provide you with optimum support. It's designed to ease aches and pains, so it's a great mattress for those with bad backs. What's more, the Ultima mattress is great for hot sleepers, because it keeps you up to two degrees cooler than other mattresses will. Where do we sign?

What is the Ultima mattress made from? And does it look stylish?

The Brook + Wilde Ultima mattress is made of ten different layers. The top layer is the brand's premium cool-to-touch cover, which reduces heat by two degrees and contains microcapsules which proactively manage body temperature by storing and releasing any excess heat.

The second layer is designed for comfort, splitting the cooling cover from the top layer of foam. The fabric is low friction and woven, indulgent and contributing to the overall luxury of the product. Layers three and four are foam layers - the first, featuring carefully designed zonal perforation, inviting cool and refreshing airflow to the surface, and the second, the ultimate comfort layer which allows four times the airflow for optimal breathability and comfort.

We're then into the fifth layer, where you'll find 2,000 nano-springs that are ergonomically designed to evenly distribute your weight. This goes hand-in-hand with layer six, which is where your individual choice of support is actioned: Soft, Medium or Firm. After that, you've got layer seven which allows for dynamic airflow to the core of your mattress, then layer eight which features a twin layer of 4,000 pocket springs to provide push-back and bounce.

Layer nine is the support foundation: a high-density support base which offers the best foundation for your perfect night’s sleep, and layer ten is the non-slip base to ensure your mattress stays put on your low platform bed frame.

Im terms of style – the bit you all want to hear about – the Brook + Wilde Ultima mattress is genuinely really stylish. Like, so stylish that it seems a shame to cover it with a mattress protector, mattress topper or bed sheet. The top half is white, textured and super-soft, while the base is navy with robust handles to make movement – and changing your bedding – a breeze. I can easily lift up each corner of the Ultima mattress using the handles to tuck my bed sheets under. The mattress is finished with an embroidered B+W monogram. It's all in the details.

Any downsides when it comes to design? It's not available in a single size, and at 30cm deep, it does add quite a lot of height to your bed. This might not be ideal for some.

Is the Ultima mattress sustainable?

Brook + Wilde boasts lots of sustainability credentials, which is crucial for GLAMOUR editors when it comes to shopping for a new mattress. For every mattress, Brook + Wilde plants a tree to help deforestation, which in turn protects plants, animals, fights against climate change and protects coastal communities from flooding.

How comfortable is the Brook + Wilde Ultima mattress?

I was seriously impressed with the comfort of the Ultima mattress from the very first night I slept on it. There wasn't any “transition period" needed to get used to it. I sleep on my side or my front, and in both positions, I didn't have a bad word to say about it. What's more, I didn't wake up with a sore lower back – which is something I usually suffer from. Thanks, WFH life. Thanks a lot.

The weight distribution of the Ultima mattress was something I was really keen to test, since I sleep super close to the edge of my mattress on most nights. One leg hanging out from under the duvet. You know the drill. Wonderfully, you can roll right up to the edge of the Ultima mattress without feeling like you're going to fall – there is no sagging whatsoever. Supreme tension: check. And when sharing a bed with someone? You can't feel a thing when your partner moves. Trust.

Finally, let's chat temperature regulation. The Ultima mattress promises to keep your body temperature regulated all night long – two degrees cooler, in fact. I tested it over the summer, so found myself powering through a couple of heatwaves in that time, and I didn't once feel like I was overheating. I usually do. I slept through the night and felt genuinely comfortable, even when temperatures hit the high twenties.

And what about the delivery and overall brand experience?

The Ultima mattress is made-to-order in six weeks, so there is a little bit of a wait when it comes to delivery. But in my opinion, the wait is totally worth it. The brand offers a free premium delivery service: expert couriers delivered my mattress on time, in the time slot they'd promised, and carried it upstairs for me.

It was vacuum packed, rolled and boxed, with instructions on how to unpack the mattress and let it settle. Having someone carry it upstairs was a god send, considering how heavy it is. You need two fairly strong people to lift the mattress. Once I was done, the team took take the packaging away for me – and if I had an old mattress I needed to dispose of, I could've paid £25 for it to be recycled.

After a few hours, the Ultima mattress was ready to sleep on; you then have a 100 night comfort trial to test the Ultima mattress out. If you don't like it, you can switch the mattress to a different firmness level – or a different Brook + Wilde mattress – free of charge… or get a complete refund.

As for the cost? If you can't justify the payment upfront, you can split the cost and pay £134.91 monthly. Plus, there's a 10-year guarantee – which is pretty standard across the industry. Five stars all round.
