A modern (and very chic) re-invention of the traditional English inn - providing food, drink and lodgings all in one place.

OUR TOP 5:
  • Originally an Elizabethan coaching inn, it has been given a stylish makeover with help from Ilse Crawford (who did the interiors for Soho House) but retains lots of period details - exposed beams and great big fireplaces - that give you that cosy, Ye Olde feel. Fun fact: the scene in Four Weddings And A Funeral where Andie McDowell and Hugh Grant get it on was filmed here.

  • The town of Amersham in Buckinghamshire is ridiculously pretty - and being on the end of the Metropolitan line it's a favourite with Londoners looking for a weekend escape. The Crown is situated on the lovely high street, which is filled with charming cafes, boutiques and branches of your smarter high-street stores (think Whistles, Hobbs and Jaeger). For outdoorsy tyes you can drive to the Chiltern Hills and Wendover Woods for a stomp about.

  • We stayed in a courtyard room, and it was a proper 'wow' moment when we opened the door. From the roll top bath in the room (there was an excellent rainforest shower in the bathroom, too), to the fluffy sheepskin rug on the rocking chair, and the modern (not to mention, giant) four-poster bed - it is the kind of room you can really kick back and relax in. Tech-wise there was free wi-fi, an iPod dock and radio hooked up to the room's speaker system, and a flat-screen TV angled perfectly so you could watch while you were in the bath, sipping the wine from the complimentary 'mini bar' tray - the ultimate luxury.

  • Dinner in the restaurant is all about fresh, locally sourced ingredients, so the menu changes regularly. A sample: Dedham Vale beef served two ways with celeriac and truffle red wine sauce, Dingley Dell pork with fondant potato and spiced apple caramel, Var Salmon with squid and lobster sauce. It's a good balance between hearty and refined: way more exciting than your standard 'pub grub', but not too fussy either. The bar serves a more informal menu (bagsy the table with the two comfy armchairs in front of the fire). They do an Afternoon Tea, too. If you're there in the summer, or on a particularly sunny day, grab a table in the pretty cobbled courtyard, or in the garden out the back.

  • And is really close from London, you can take the Metropolitan line, or a train from Marylebone - the Crown is just over a fifteen minute walk from the station (or you can hop in a five-minute taxi). Amersham train station is served by Chiltern Railways. If you're driving, Amersham is easily accessible by the M40.
