How to choose your wedding dress, according to your star sign

Lets be honest: while getting married is a beautiful experience, the wedmin leading up to it can be a lot. And as for choosing a wedding dress from the style to the colour, not to mention accessories where do you even begin?

Let’s be honest: while getting married is a beautiful experience, the wedmin leading up to it can be a lot. And as for choosing a wedding dress – from the style to the colour, not to mention accessories – where do you even begin?

Well, if your Pinterest mood boards are out of control and you’re feeling overwhelmed with choice, don’t worry, help is at hand. It might just be time to seek a little guidance from the stars.

After all, your astrological chart (from your sun sign, to your moon and rising signs) can tell you so much about the kind of person you are. So if you’re looking for a wedding dress that feels like you, why not consult your star sign to decode which dress styles will reflect your true character?

In case you’re not completely familiar with how astrological charts work, we’ll quickly break it down for you. First up is your sun sign (often referred to as your star sign), which is the essence of who you are. Your moon sign is linked to your emotions, and can often reveal underlying feelings you didn’t even realise you had. And your rising sign is how you present yourself to the world; how others see you.

So if you look deep into your astrological profile and understand the meanings and characteristics of these three signs, you can go into wedding dress shopping with a true sense of self, to find a bridal gown (or suit, or whatever kind of outfit you please) that really, truly feels like you.

Ready to discover the characteristics of each sign, plus a little wedding dress inspo? Here, two experts –  spiritual wellness consultant Belinda Matwali and astrologist and writer Lucy Porter – decode your star signs to help you on your way…

Aries

20 March–19 April

The characteristics: “Aries are impulsive, initiators and go-getters. They are not scared to trailblaze and try something new – in fact, that’s their gift,” says Porter. “Aries are passionate, intuitive and focus on what feels good in the moment more than planning for what's to come.” With this in mind, Aries will likely surprise guests with their choice of gown, perhaps with a style unlike anything they’ve worn before.

The dress: According to Matwali, Aries is “not one for ‘fluff’ – the dress is likely to be strikingly simple”. Though, this doesn’t mean boring. “Aries is ruled by Mars, which brings a lot of fire and courage, so although simple, expect the dress to be smouldering hot, perhaps with a thigh-high split,” she explains. Plus, Aries rules the head and eyes, “so some kind of headpiece or veil could also give your dress an alluring, smoky factor.”

Taurus

20 April–20 May

The characteristics: “Taureans are sensual, considered and grounded. They take their time to make decisions, never rushing,” says Porter. So for all the Taureans out there, keep in mind that you might want to take some time to choose arguably the most important dress of your life. “Taureans follow the 3 S’s: sensuality, stability and security,” adds Porter. “Things have to look good, feel good and be long-lasting.”

The dress: With this in mind, a dress that feels good is important for Taureans – from luxurious fabrics to high-quality cuts and a perfect fit. “Taurus is ruled by Venus, so it’s a sign that loves beauty and romance,” explains Matwali, who suggests they try “a romantic, elegant dress” that nods to tradition – think flowers, and perhaps even some heirloom or borrowed jewellery to complete the look. “Taurus governs the throat and neck area,” adds Matwali, “so a dress that has some embellishment there, such as a sheer, high neckline, a necklace, or one designed so that the neck looks best bare” would be a great choice.

Gemini

21 May–20 June

The characteristics: “Geminis are quick-witted, fast-thinking, naturally witty and move through life quickly. What excites them is new ideas and concepts,” explains Porter. “A Gemini will always have a back up plan (or three!)” she adds – meaning that Geminis might want to have different options on hand throughout the day. Prepare to shop for multiple looks, then…

The dress: “For sure, it will be a dress to talk about,” says Matwali. “It might be a versatile dress that has a high front and low back, or a day and a night dress, so you can show off your different sides.” She also explains that Gemini rules the hands, so you might want to incorporate “extra embellishment on the wrists, whether it be a bracelet, corsage, or interesting cuffs on a long-sleeved dress.”

Cancer

21 June–21 July

The characteristics: “Cancerians are loyal, sensitive and nurturing. The sign of Cancer rules family and places huge importance on roots, safety and comfort,” says Porter. “They are deeply intuitive and tender, often having senses about things without any concrete evidence. For Cancers, their emotions have to be in sync with what's going on around them, that gut instinct must feel right.” So when it comes to choosing a wedding dress, Cancers – trust your gut.

The dress: “Pearls all the way,” says Matwali. “Cancer is ruled by the moon and emotions, so there might be a sentimental element of a dress passed down in the family or an heirloom element.” She also explains that it is a romantic water sign, so the look might incorporate flounces, ruffles or ‘pretty’ details. “Cancer rules the breasts in astrology,” she adds, “so there could be a sweetheart neckline, or a detail that shows off their décolletage.”

Leo

22 July–22 August

The characteristics: “Leos are flamboyant, expressive, playful and very comfortable being seen: the bigger, the better; the more excessive, the more fun,” says Porter. “For Leos, life is a stage to play on, and there is room for everyone at the theatre!” It goes without saying then, that a bold, possibly big, gown is on the cards.

The dress: Matwali describes a Leo’s perfect dress as a “show stopper”. “Leos give queen vibes, but can also be very playful, so there may be an element of having fun with your dress.” She explains that Leo rules the heart and spine, “inviting a dramatic open back or plunging neckline” – this will be a look guaranteed to turn heads.

Virgo

23 August–22 September

The characteristics: “Virgos are refined, detail-oriented and highly sensitive. If a complex task can be made more simple, a Virgo will do just that, and they are famous for their rigorous planning,” says Porter. “Virgos love self-care, healing and wellness and are naturally very accountable with how they move in the world.” So when it comes to wedding planning, Virgo brides are guaranteed to be ahead of schedule. And as for the dress, expect nothing less than pared-back elegance and the finest craftsmanship.

The dress: Matwali sums up the Virgo style of choice as “effortless effort, where everything looks clean and beautiful but so much attention to detail has gone into it”. Think: “exquisite finishing details, such as beading, embroidery, lace, pleating, or covered buttons”. Matwali adds that, “Virgo rules the abdomen, so there may be tailoring to accentuate the waist, or for a modern Virgo a two-piece with a subtle glimpse of midriff skin.”

Libra

23 September–22 October

The characteristics: “Libras are romantic, playful, open-minded and impressionable. It’s easy to see why they are linked to marriage in astrology,” says Porter. “Libras place a strong emphasis on union; everything in life is to be shared and celebrated together. A shadow of this is that sometimes it can be hard for Libra to think for themselves,” she adds – so while it’s important to have a supportive friend or group with you when trying on dresses, these should also be friends who encourage Libras to go with the wedding look they like best.

The dress: “Libra has an appreciation for all things beautiful, especially when it comes to design. The dress could be a beautiful work of wearable art that even has elements of architectural design,” explains Matwali. “There is a joke about Libras being indecisive, so they may opt for a two-dress wedding.” She adds that Libra rules the skin and lower back, so a “strapless or sheer dresses that show off skin could appeal, or even a cut-out back feature.”

Scorpio

23 October–21 November

The characteristics: “Scorpios are naturally magnetic, intuitive and act based upon instinct. They tend to make their own decisions, separate from the status quo or what is expected of them,” says Porter. “Things often come into Scorpio's life unexpectedly (because of their natural magnetism), so life can often feel unpredictable, exciting and uncertain.” In terms of a Scorpio’s bridal look, this means you should expect the unexpected.

The dress: “The Scorpio bride will want a dramatic look; sleek yet seductive. Scorpio rules the reproductive organs, so there can be a sultry energy to their dress.” says Matwali. She recommends a figure-hugging style, paired with a veil “to add an air of mystery and intrigue”, finished with a red lip.

Sagittarius

22 November–20 December

The characteristics: “Sagittarius’ are free-thinking, jovial, expansive and seeking. They love to broaden their horizons and are fiercely independent, relying on themselves first before turning to another,” says Porter. “A Sag is always up for an adventure; especially if it's last-minute!” So whether you’re planning a big ceremony in advance or dashing to Vegas for an impromptu wedding, the outfit will be 100% a Saggitarius’ choice, that’s for sure.

The dress: “With a thirst for adventure and travel, Sagittarians are known to equally take risks with their dress and not be afraid to try new things and be bold,” says Matwali. “This sign rules the hips and thighs, so there could be intricate tailoring to this area, such as a drop-waist, trumpet-style dress,” she adds. Matwali also notes that Sagittarians like to move with ease, so underneath their long dress or trousers, they’re likely to be sporting a comfy pair of shoes, such as ballet flats or even trainers!

Capricorn

21 December–19 January

The characteristics: “Capricorns take life seriously. Often the organiser of the group, a Capricorn will probably have a Pinterest board for everything they want in life,” says Porter – so Capricorn brides probably already have a pretty good idea of the dress they’ll be looking for. “A Capricorn wants the best; high quality, longevity and they are not scared to work hard for it,” she adds.

The dress: “An earth sign, ruled by traditional Saturn, Capricorns will likely opt for something classic and conservative – but well-structured, with clean lines, rather than flouncy,” says Matwali. She explains that Capricorns are often seen as the CEO of the zodiac, so “the modern Capricorn may opt for a sharp bridal suit. Capricorn rules the bones, so the outfit could highlight the collar bone, perhaps with a strapless top (or corset with boning), paired with a skirt or long trousers.”

Aquarius

20 January–17 February

The characteristics: “Aquarians are the wildcard of the zodiac. They are spontaneous, humorous, unpredictable and free-spirited,” says Porter. “An Aquarian will always do things differently; go against the status quo or what’s expected. For them, the most important thing is that they feel like themselves.” So, Aquarius brides are set to surprise as the walk down the aisle – theirs probably won’t be your average bridal look.

The dress: “Aquarius is ruled by Uranus, which is the creative rebel archetype. All the ‘typical’ bridal whites and shapes might be overlooked,” explains Matwali. So Aquarians might want to eschew traditional white, opting for a colourful look instead – ”anything from pastel to brights to metallic sequins could come into this choice,” she says. “Equally, the usual bridal silhouettes may be out. Aquarius rules the shins and ankles, so the dress may be shorter to show off the lower legs, or even capri trousers, with show-stopping shoes with ankle straps or anklets to accentuate this body par,” says Matwali.

Pisces

18 February–19 March

The characteristics: “Pisces are the dreamers, the artists, the healers. Naturally psychic, deeply intuitive and super sensitive, Pisces protect their energy by needing lots of their own space,” explains Porter. So for Piscean brides, a solo trip to look for wedding outfits might just be on the cards.

The dress: “Dreamy, ethereal, magical, are all words to describe the essence of this sign. That will look slightly different for everyone, depending on your interpretation. Choosing the right dress will likely be a highly intuitive process,” says Matwali. She explains that as the symbol for Pisces is the two fishes, this might mean that there could be an oceanic or mermaid theme to the outfit choice. She adds that: “Pisces rules the feet, so the bride might even go shoeless with a stunning pedicure, letting her feet touch the ground, or show-stopping but comfortable shoes so you can glide ethereally in throughout the day.”
